What is Orofacial Myology?

You might be wondering what the words ‘Orofacial Myology’ means or how an exercise program may help you or your child.

Orofacial Myology is defined as the treatment of the orofacial musculature to improve muscle tone and establish the correct function of the tongue, lips, and jaw.

At KIDS we work with patients who are experiencing complications related to the muscles in the face, jaw, lips, tongue and/or neck. Helping both adults and children to get your muscles working as they should. These muscles can affect how you eat, breathe, sleep, and impact your overall health and well being.

We aren’t interested in band-aid solutions. Our approach is all about treating the cause, not the symptoms. We use strategies and exercises to overcome orofacial disorders that develop from the abnormal lip, jaw or tongue position during rest, swallowing or speech, or that are caused by prolonged oral habits such as thumb sucking, nail biting or lip tucking (tucking bottom lip behind front teeth).

All patients (above the age of 2) that are having a tongue or lip ties revised at KIDS are required to carry out OM therapy prior to and post-release to ensure the best possible outcome of their treatment.

We understand that proper oral function is critical for proper development and that reduced tongue mobility can lead to high arch palates, narrow jaws, and elongated soft palates. This may then result in more serious conditions such as Sleep Disorder Breathing or Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

We carry out a range of OM Programs for different age groups and concerns;

OM for Adults

OM for Snoring

OM and Orthodontics

OM for Kids

Jaw Play for Toddlers

Thumbsucking Program

On behalf of your and/or your child’s wellbeing, our Orofacial Myologist will provide you with a fun, engaging program to ensure the best possible outcome for your treatment.
