BIG HIGH LEVEL PICTURE OF WHAT IS BEING DONE

Our Approach - Nurtured by Nature

At the focus of our service, we want to provide your kids and family with the best alternatives that give you the most natural way to address many health outcomes. We want to give your KIDS the best start in life, just like you do.

We've created a stress-free and enjoyable environment for kids of any age to receive all the care they need. After all, learning should be fun (even for teenagers)!

Issues related to breathing, posture, clenching, grinding and overall KIDS' well-being will all be evaluated and assessed with the most appropriate allied health professional as part of the assessment, to give you the optimal outcome and to make sure the journey of good health is not confusing.

We want to provide you with the tools to make informed decisions based on our experienced health professional's recommendations.

Our Myobrace pre-orthodontic treatment allows us to identify and plan treatment options for crooked teeth, and educate kids on how to address the underlying condition in the most appropriate manner.

We understand that kids are not always keen on wearing anything in their mouth, which is why we make it fun and interactive so they can see the benefit for themselves!

Childhood oral health is critical for a long, healthy and happy life.

Everything we do focuses on giving you and your family the most caring and nurturing environment that gives you a range of options for your care.

For our Lip and Tongue Tie Care, we provide the care, support and treatment to ensure you can make the decision that is best for you today, and into the future.

Your experience at KIDS for Lip and Tongue Tie has been created to give you an area to relax during the treatment and refresh and nourish your baby in a private and caring environment.

We recognise that bonding with your infant is extremely important, which is why we have created the Nurturing Room where you can have your own space with your baby, without interruptions.

For an overview of services, check out our handy brochure for KIDS.

Our Scope of Care

Here at KIDS, we understand that you are busy, and finding the correct care for your child can be a minefield.

That is why we believe that it takes a wide collection of trained health professionals to deliver you the best outcome for your child and your family.

Dr. Google may be quick to use but it certainly does not answer all your questions sufficiently. Believe us, we have searched! For example, a child that mouth breathes may have issues related to airways, posture and teeth formation.

That is why here at KIDS, we have over 20 years of experience to recognise a range of underlying health issues that connect and relate to a range of other health conditions. KIDS has created a service that meets the needs and requirements of the families we care for. We want our families to feel free to ask the questions they have always wanted to know the answers too.

We believe that it is not just one health professional that can help a child, but many working together to help the child improve in all areas. We provide a natural approach to caring for our KIDS' health, and have partnered with these trusted professionals to give you the best advice and treatment options that suit you and your child's needs.

Our core service centres around oral health and function, and is fully supported for our Lip and Tongue Tie care along with Chiropractors to provide pre and post-procedure care. We deliver you and your family solutions and options through nurturing for your kids' health in the most natural way so that you get the best long-term health for your kids and your entire family.

We are here for you and your family to provide outstanding health care.

What Is Unique About KIDS

KIDS has been specially designed to meet the desires of its families based on a deep understanding of types of care and treatment which give our KIDS the optimal outcomes. From an engaging and colourful waiting room, the Myobrace Education Centre, through to the Care Rooms (or otherwise know as Treatment Rooms)... We have created spaces both you and your child will love.

Great care and attention to detail have gone into developing KIDS. From fun activities to keep kids busy with iPads and PlayStation, through to fun characters and a colourful environment; it all makes KIDS a fun and enjoyable place your kids will want to return to. No more fighting in the car about heading to the dentist! It can be a place you look forward to relaxing with your child.

KIDS has also created a Nurture Room for pre and post care, and privacy for our Lip and Tongue Tie Care. With a soft, gentle and nurturing environment, this Nurture Room is separated from the rest of the practice and provides privacy and care when you need it most.

It's so good that you will be reluctant to leave!

KIDS takes a holistic approach - why is it different?

We want to find out exactly what the cause of the issue is, not just mask the symptoms. By having a whole family approach to improve the outcomes, not just for your child but also for the whole family, KIDS aims to show the family the correct path and better start for a longer and healthier life.

KIDS believes that parents should be setting the example for their children and without educating the entire family, how will the children learn what is best?

We know life is busy and that is why we want to help you provide the tools to your child to understand what is needed for a healthy routine.

KIDS' health is a big jigsaw puzzle with many different elements and aspects, and if you think that only one health professional can fix all your child's problems, think again!

The reality is that your child needs a team of professionals who are willing to cross bridges and look at the problem from all the aspects through the eyes of other health professionals.

The traditional way of thinking is to medicate the symptoms without looking at the root cause of the problem. We've come to think of illness as a catalogue of problems to be solved, but we tend not to think enough about wellness.

By looking at the human body and its wellbeing as a complex structure, we can no longer think that we can treat a problem in one area and ignore the rest.

Children and young people should be treated as thinking, feeling people who are members of a family and who have a range of strengths and needs. Health professionals should consider all these, not just the health problem the child or young person has that day.

The health of children determines their health as adults, so by giving the young kids the best chance at the start of their life, we set them on a better track for adulthood. The goal is to encourage as many kids as possible to enter their adulthood with maximum potential for health and wellbeing uncompromised.

What is a multidisciplinary approach to kids' health? This means multiple health professionals sharing their expertise to provide the best possible treatment and outcomes for your child.

Once an infant is born and checked at the hospital for all vital signs and responses for general health, they get to be discharged and go home with parents. Thinking about it in simple terms as parents always say "my baby feeds, sleeps and poos" and if we take the sleeping out of the sentence, we can see that the baby feed and poo, that is a whole one system of the human body called the digestive system.

As the knowledge increases of the importance of feeding in early infancy and childhood, the function of feeding "correctly " has become an area of focus to enforce the correct function from the start.

At this early stage of life, a team approach consists of Lactation Consultant, Chiropractor, Speech Pathologist, Dentist, Midwife, Podiatrist, Nutritionist who can share their wide knowledge and expertise to improve the functionality as early as possible. Having multiple professionals allows for better holistic approach to the problem and improve the final outcomes for your child.

The holistic health assessment to provide your child with the best start to life! We know it can be challenging being a parent, with everyone offering their two cents on every topic. However, we are here to provide you with facts so you can make an informed decision.

There are many factors to consider in determining the child's entire picture of health.

Nutritional: Nutrients are needed to provide energy and assist in the functioning of many bodily processes. We will spend the time to look at what your child eats on a regular basis and ask questions to get a full picture of the child's lifestyle and eating habits.

We believe that even simple changes to your child's diet can improve their health considerably. We know it can be hard with work and multiple children but with the correct tools and knowledge, we look forward to stepping you through what can be sometimes a very confusing and time-consuming task to provide the correct foods to your child.

Structural: The structure of the body includes the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems. The components of these systems give the body support to stand upright and move around in all directions. The nervous system controls nerve impulses from the brain that stimulate important organs and tissue of the body. Improper spinal alignment may cause patterns of strain and impede the flow of nerve impulses and energy to certain organs and tissues, which can result in pain or disease. Chiropractic adjustments can be beneficial in aligning the spine and unblocking the nerve flow. The head is made up of many bones and muscles including both jaws, teeth, lips and tongue that are supposed to move gently in synchronisation with one another to allow for the proper movement of fluids. Craniosacral work is the gentle movement of the bones and muscles of the head and sacrum. Practitioners who do this work are usually chiropractors or osteopaths who can also do gentle spinal manipulations for children.

Musculature: The muscles around the head should be able to move freely without any restrictions or tension. When there is any restriction of the muscles, it should be released to allow for better free function of these muscles. Apart from the muscles around the head and spine, oral muscles such as tongue, lips and cheeks can become restricted with what's known as ties or frenum. These oral ties limit the proper function of these muscles and cause tension and poor function which in turn affects the head, jaw and spinal bones. The effect of these ties, if left untreated, carries on lifetime impacts on the whole body.

Healing Vs Curing: We have been used to calling upon doctors to cure us. Curing means the elimination of signs and symptoms of a disease, treatment with drugs or other methods may help to cure the symptoms. However, unless the underlying issues are identified, symptoms may occur. Healing goes deeper than curing and occurs when the root cause is overcome. Therefore at KIDS, we look for the source of the problem rather than treating just the symptoms.

At KIDS, we are seeking the root cause of symptoms and deal with these causes to achieve a long-term healing and improved transition to the adulthood stage of life. A proper and thorough assessment of children from as early as one day old by a group of professionals to evaluate the infant functionality will help to allow for early detection of issues that may impact on their life in the future.

CDBS

Do you know if you are eligible for up to $1000 worth of dental care over a two year period? Let us check for you!

Submit this form and we will be in touch to check your eligibility and/or leftover funds.

If you’re not sure how much of your allocation you have left, or if you are eligible for CDBS, we can check for you at any time.

Under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, every eligible member of your family under the age of 17 receives a government contribution towards dental care. Eligibility is determined by whether the child is covered by Medicare, or if the family is in receipt of certain government payments. A rolling two-year funding period applies, and therefore it can, on occasion, be helpful to consider the timing of your child's dental treatment.

Your child's $1,000 benefit runs over two consecutive calendar years. Before starting treatment, our dentists will explain all likely costs and get your consent in writing. If any additional work is identified following the initial examination, the costs will also be discussed and your consent obtained. In this way, you can decide how quickly to use your $1,000 allocation; using it all at once if you need to, or spreading it out over two years.

QIP Accreditation - KIDS

"Achieving accreditation demonstrates a commitment to the provision of excellent dental care and continuous quality improvement within the practice." - Quality Innovation Performance

What is QIP Accreditation?

The accreditation of private dental practices' is based on the integration of a set of National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards into everyday practice culture and patient safety. These standards harmonise regulatory requirements passed down by both Federal and State governments, with highlights being the demonstration of clear and evidence-based patient benefits when visiting an accredited practice.

What does this mean for you?

When choosing an accredited practice, a patient can expect a reduction in clinical and general risks, as well as the peace of mind in knowing that all staff are educated and engaged in the implementation of dental systems and improvement of dental processes within their practice.

NSQHS Standards for Dentists' were adopted by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care in 2011. The attainment of these standards means a dental practice has proven to be of the highest calibre in delivering quality patient care within Australia.

KIDS now proudly belongs to a new age of accredited dental practices, meeting QIP quality standards of patient care for all patients.

What this means for us?

We assure you we are committed to ongoing improvement of the policies and procedures that govern our dental practice, providing assurance to patients, staff, colleagues and peers that we are committed to quality, safety and excellence across all standards.

Accreditation is independent recognition that we have met the requirements based on defined criteria and a set of standards that all practices can be judged equally against. Accreditation provides assurance to our patients, staff and everyone associated with the Practice that quality and performance standards have been met and are being constantly evaluated and improved upon.

If you would like to find out more about the accreditation of our practice please Contact Us for more information.

Belinda Wix - Nutritional Therapist

Belinda is a Nutritional Therapist based in Mackay Queensland.  She practices Functional Nutrition and has a passion for getting to the bottom of your health concerns.

With a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, she has worked as a Medical Scientist for 15 years in Pathology and since becoming a mother to 2 beautiful children, her passion shifted to nutrition.  She realised the food we put into our bodies affects how the body functions and what is healthy for one person is not necessarily good for another. This curiosity of people’s Bio-Individuality led her to complete studies with the Nutritional Therapy Association of America being a part of the inaugural Brisbane 2015 Class.

After being in practice for almost a year, she realised there was something missing – that one can’t address the body without including the mind.  So she went on to complete certification as a Theta Healing Practitioner, helping her clients to recognise limiting beliefs and deeply held blocks that sabotage their true potential to reach their goals.  Happiness and Health should be a natural state and at Inside Out Nutritional Therapy this is achieved from the inside out.

Credentials

  • Bachelor Medical Laboratory Science 2002
  • 15 years Medical Scientist Private and Public Pathology

What is a Nutritional Therapist?

A Nutritional Therapist is an accredited para professional who has been certified to perform Functional Evaluations in order to make nutritional recommendations to balance body chemistry and achieve optimal wellness. (Nutritional Therapy Association, 2018)

Nutritional therapists practice Functional Nutrition and recognise we are all bio-individuals with individual requirements.  We help to address functional imbalances in the body that you know as signs and symptoms your body is experiencing. Nutritional therapists believe in supporting wellness by addressing the Foundations of Digestion, Blood Sugar Regulation, Hydration, Essential Fatty Acids and Minerals/ Vitamins. Combining the foundations with a nutrient dense, whole foods, properly prepared diet enables the practitioner to get to the “root cause” of your body’s dysfunction enabling you to move towards creating optimal health.

Nutritional therapists work very well with other practitioners as we realise that in order to achieve whole body wellness the “whole” body needs to be considered.

What is Functional Nutrition?

This is how the foods you eat directly affect how your body functions.  Our entire body is made up of cells.  These cells come together to form tissues.  The tissues come together to form organs.  The organs all form part of a system.  The systems combined make up our body.  The health of our cells directly correlates to the healthy functioning of our body.  If we feed our cells on a cellular level the appropriate nutrients then those cells are healthy.

What’s it like to work with a Nutritional Therapist?

Nutritional therapists will listen to you. They spend time talking things through and work with you to create a wellness plan which is achievable and empowering.  Your practitioner will use their knowledge to assist you in re-establishing the health of the cells in your body. The Functional Evaluation and other testing forms are used to determine areas of dysfunction and opportunities for healing. Nutritional therapists support you to understand the signs and signals that your body gives you which are key to providing information on your body’s underlying dysfunction and they support you to make the necessary Dietary and Lifestyle changes that are recommended for you to achieve optimal wellness.

At Inside Out Nutritional Therapy we focus on improving dietary, genetic, environmental, mind, body, spirit and lifestyle imbalances that are contributing to your current state of wellness.  We will use food, specific dietary protocols (if necessary), targeted supplementation, lifestyle practices and emotional release techniques to target the root-cause of your dysfunction and restore balance back to your body promoting illness prevention, happiness and health!

The BRAVE Program for Parents and Caregivers of Young Children

Over the last 15 years, research team from Griffith University and the University of Southern Queensland have developed and tested a suite of internet-based programs for the treatment of childhood anxiety, called BRAVE-ONLINE.

Their other programs for older children (aged 7-12) and teenagers (aged 13-17) have been freely available since 2014 and have been used by almost 30,000 families. These programs are now available to all Australian families free of charge thanks to their partnership with Beyond Blue.

Their latest program is for parents of young children aged 3-7 years who suffer with anxiety (including worry and fears).

The BRAVE Program for Parents and Caregivers of Young Children provides parents with education about child anxiety and teaches parents a variety of strategies to manage anxiety-provoking situations that their child may experience. Parents will also receive information on strategies to better manage their child’s anxious behaviours.

Parents can register for FREE by completing a few short anonymous surveys that will help the Universities (and the parent) track their child’s progress. Then, they will have access to evidence-based sessions and resources to help their child.

What is Lip and Tongue Tie?

Lip and tongue tie affects around 5% of Australian newborns. Aside from future speech difficulties and distress to whenever eating certain types of food, in the short term, lip and tongue tie causes trouble with the feeding and development issues.

At KIDS, our mission is to help you and your infant get the best possible bond together! Our team helps newborns through to children with lip and tongue ties. We want to give your child a healthy start to life, just like you do.

The following are some more symptoms you and your baby may experience:

• Poor latch/inability to latch, sliding off the nipple

• Fatigue during feeds, clicking during a feed, poor weight gain

• Nipple pain or damage, incomplete breast drainage, mastitis

• Digestive issues (increased gassiness and reflux due to extra air being swallowed)

• Problems with bottle feeding, spilling milk and unable to seal mouth around the teat

If you answered 'yes', that may mean your infant has a restricted frenum, commonly known as a lip and tongue tie. Don't worry, it's nothing unusual! In fact, it occurs in approximately 5% of newborns.

Visit Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) to find out more about breastfeeding issues related to lip and tongue ties.

Even though having your child diagnosed as a newborn gives them the best start as they will adjust quicker, it can be diagnosed in a child of any age. In some cases, children can learn to function with the tie. In other cases, whenever lip-tie symptoms persist, treatment is required. Getting a professional to review your child will help provide you with answers regarding if your child is indeed in need of a tie correction.

How is the lip & tongue tie surgery?

How is it done? Well, we have great news, as the lip and tongue correction treatment is done in-office and doesn't require any sedation during early infancy. This means, that it may be less traumatic and non-memorable for your child. We want to give your baby the best start in life and that is why at KIDS we take total care of you and your baby.

We love to see infants and families in our practice, and we will do our very best to fit you in as quickly as possible.

What is Frenectomy

A frenectomy is simply the removal of a frenum in the mouth.

A frenum is a muscular attachment between two tissues. There are two frena (the plural form of frenum) in the mouth that can sometimes obstruct normal function and are candidates for frenectomies.

These frena are called the lingual frenum, which connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth, and the maxillary labial frenum, which connects the inside of the upper lip to the gums just above the upper two front teeth.

lip and tongue tie dentalcarextra kids

Above you can see a diagram of the mouth and the major frena that are present. Recommended for babies born with a short, long, or tight frenulum which may cause difficulty breastfeeding and patients who have speech difficulties as a result of the frenulum being too tight.

To improve your baby's lip and/or tongue mobility as well as functionality, we at KIDS perform this procedure using laser*.

KIDS uses Soft Tissue Laser to treat lip and tongue ties. This is our preferred approach to treating lip and tongue ties.

A Soft Tissue Laser has the benefit of:

• Less invasive therapy, no cutting or sutures

• Virtually painless and less swelling

• Lasers remove any infection and bacteria like no other method can

• Faster healing due to laser bio-stimulation of the cells

• Faster recovery than the conventional method

As we use Soft Tissue Laser (which allows for releasing tongue ties and lip ties in babies with minimal bleeding) stitches are not required, therefore a general anaesthetic for your baby is not needed. A small amount of local anaesthetic may be used.

When a laser is used to release a tongue tie, it allows for a more considered approach to tongue tie release, not just a quick snip of scissors and a hope the job is done! This is because of the preciseness of the laser that is designed to focus on the area of treatment. A laser allows your baby's lip and tongue ties to be released at the same time.

Lip Tie Symptoms

Related to tongue tie (and its posterior hidden variant) which may cause problems with breastfeeding, upper lip tie is when the upper lip is tethered to the upper gum.

In older children and adolescents, an upper lip tie can be associated with a gap between the front teeth.

Though most infants have some degree of upper lip tie, when it becomes large and tight enough, it may prevent the upper lip from flaring out or curling up which is essential for breastfeeding in order to create an adequate seal with the breast. Also, some infants with upper lip tie will exhibit an upper lip crease with the skin turning pale in an attempt to flare up during breastfeeding.

If the upper lip tie is tight enough, an infant may have trouble feeding even from a bottle.

Symptoms include:

• Prolonged breastfeedings

• Difficulty with latching

• Painful nipples (secondary to baby's struggling to achieve an adequate seal against the breast)

Infant is excessively gassy

A good seal helps the baby draw the nipple deeply into the mouth and assists in the suck in order to swallow the milk produced by the breast. When a good seal is absent, an excessive amount of air is introduced into the baby's mouth which is also swallowed along with the milk causing a too-gassy baby. Further, lack of a good seal makes it more difficult for the baby to maintain the nipple's position in the mouth making for a prolonged and uncomfortable feeding.

Tongue Tie Symptoms

Tongue tie (otherwise known as ankyloglossia) is when the tip of the tongue is anchored to the floor of the mouth (lingual frenulum). Tongue tie may extend all the way to the tip or it may extend partially to the tip, resulting in a partial tongue tie.

Symptoms include:

Trouble with breastfeeding and even bottle feeding

• Swallowing problems along with mouth-breathing

• In toddlers, speech difficulties with sounds requiring a mobile tongue tip (sibilants and lingual sounds)

• In teenagers and adults, continued speech difficulties, eating or even unable to kiss properly!

But when it comes to newborns, tongue tie can lead to feeding problems which can be quite distressing to both mother and child.

With tongue tie, the tip of the tongue is unable to help the infant draw the nipple into the mouth. It also prevents the tongue from being normally positioned between the nipple and lower gum line, leading the infant to 'chew' on the nipple.

An example of tongue tie in a baby:

Effects Of Non Treatment

About 5% of children are born with some degree of frenulum restriction, also known as tongue tie or lip tie. What it means in practice, is that they suffer from restrictions of movement. It impedes the movement of the tongue or lips to various degrees.

"Okay, but what does it actually mean for my baby?"...

That means that your baby might have problems with suckling efficiently at the breast or bottle, which causes compensated ways of swallowing. This may lead to nipple pain and trauma, poor breast drainage, therefore, leading to a decrease in milk supply over time.

When it comes to bottle feeding, tongue/lip ties cause incorrect function habit and increase intake of air, and often spilling and drooling milk. This will affect the formation of jaw bones and lead to exhaustion of your baby. Your baby has to work at least twice as hard to get the right amount of milk!

When breastfeeding success is not achieved and breast milk substitutes are used, optimum infant outcomes are reduced. This may lead to both short and long-term effects such as:

  • Reduced immunity to disease if mother's milk is not used
  • Increased risk of juvenile type diabetes, allergies and gastrointestinal problems
  • Increased risk of spinal development abnormalities / increased risk of dental decay
  • Increase risk of developing speech problems / increased risk of developing breathing problems
  • Increased risk of poor oral hygiene / developing incorrect swallowing pattern
  • Orthodontic problems and facial development abnormalities
  • Poor weight gain
  • ‘V’ shaped notch at the tip of the tongue
  • Inability to stick out the tongue past the upper gums
  • Inability to touch the roof of the mouth
  • Difficulty moving tongue side to side
  • Significant spacing or gap between upper or lower front teeth

So, get in touch with KIDS and our experienced and caring team will assist you with any questions and concerns you may have, and help you to navigate your way through the lip and tongue tie procedure.

How do we Treat Lip and Tongue Ties

Although there are other ways of treating lip and tongue ties, at KIDS we prefer using Soft Tissue Laser to provide the best results for our patients.

Let's have a look at benefits:

• Less invasive therapy, no cutting or sutures

• Virtually painless and less swelling

• Lasers remove infection and bacteria like no other method can

• Faster healing due to laser bio-stimulation of your cells

• Faster recovery than the conventional method

Now, let us tell you something about traditional methods.

Where a tongue tie is being released with a snip of scissors, the tissue here is very thin and there is a greater chance that it will bleed significantly.

What about lip ties then? Those are thick and fleshy, which means when they are cut they not only bleed but also require stitches (suturing). Furthermore, this requires your baby to stay still, which is practically impossible with babies or small children. We understand how hard this can be! That is why this procedure can only be done with a general anaesthetic.

At KIDS, we chose soft tissue laser which allows for a more considered approach, because of the preciseness of the laser. It is designed to focus on the area of treatment and allows your baby's lip and tongue ties to be released at the same time.

If you want to treat your baby's lip and tongue ties with the laser, come and visit us at KIDS*. We are the only practitioners in Central Queensland that have invested in this advanced technology and training to give you and your family the optimal care and results.

KIDS Fotona Lightwalker Laser

Our laser used at KIDS is the most advanced laser of its type in Central Queensland - The Fotona LightWalker Hard & Soft Tissue Dental Laser.

For our patients who are into the technical aspects of our Hard & Soft Tissue Laser......here you go!

In LightWalker, both “gold standard” laser wavelengths are produced by solid crystal lasers that can significantly outperform diode lasers in terms of peak power and the range of pulse durations.

The LightWalker provides fast, efficient cutting with unmatched patient comfort. With the advent of QSP technology and higher output power (several kW), the LightWalker ATS has established a new standard for ablation/cutting speed. This new accelerated cutting speed provides the speed and precision, while simultaneously increasing patient comfort.

LightWalker provides precise tissue surgery with simultaneous disinfection. The homogeneous absorption of the Nd:YAG laser in soft tissue results in controlled tissue vaporization with simultaneous coagulation for superior healing and disinfection.

Role of Lactation Consultant

A Lactation Consultant plays a critical role in the entire process of identification, care and re-education of mother and child before, during and after the lip and tongue tie procedure. She will identify problems and work with you to achieve your goals, mapping out an individual care plan for you and your baby.

When an infant has had a restriction, it is important to retrain both mother and baby on how to best achieve normal feeding. We work with the Lactation Consultant to ensure your child gets the optimal long term outcome for lifelong health benefits.

The Lactation Consultant can help you with:

- Positioning and attachment difficulties

- Slow weight gain

- Compromised (low) milk supply

- Breast and nipple care due to damage

- Discomfort or pain while nursing

- Blocked ducts / thrush / mastitis

- Sleep deprivation due to frequency of feeding

- Anxiety, stress and fatigue

- Breast and/or bottle refusal

We highly recommend that patients receive chiropractic therapy in the 24 hours prior to treatment as well as another one 48 hours after treatment. Let us explain why:

The treatment undertaken by an experienced and qualified Chiropractor increases the flexibility and suppleness of the muscles in the mouth, neck and head. This then has a positive impact on the outcome of the treatment. Chiropractic also plays an important role in establishing new muscle habits along with new neural pathways.

Why do we recommend Chiropractic or Cranio-sacral therapy Pre and Post Frenectomy?

The human body is an amazing, intelligent and complex jigsaw puzzle. Everything within it is intrinsically linked and works to allow optimal functioning. In case of any functional restriction or inhibition, it innately compensates elsewhere to allow that function to continue.

In the case of a tongue/lip tie, there is an over-activation of the surrounding musculature. That places unbalanced stress on the developing cranial and skeletal structures. Because the frenulum is a midline structure of the body, as are the spine and nervous system, quite often when restriction occurs in the mouth, it is also noted in the spine. For this reason, having a Chiropractor or other specialised Cranio-sacral therapist helps to release these areas of restriction, enhances the outcome of the frenectomy procedure, and allows the body to heal more efficiently.

To ensure that the body functions at its best to optimally integrate the procedure, therapy performed before the procedure is needed. Chiropractors adjust the spine and cranial system so that any areas of potential interference to the nervous system are removed. This allows the brain to better control optimal healing of the body. It also allows the body to accurately relay messages back to the brain. Surgeons often underline that it is much easier for them to access the tissues in the area of treatment, especially when it comes to the floor and roof of the mouth, because the muscles and soft tissue have been released and are more relaxed. The child feels more comfortable as well, so usually is way more relaxed during the procedure.

What does a Chiropractic adjustment entail?

First of all, the pressure used to adjust a child or baby is incredibly gentle and much like a soft massage. Particular attention is usually paid to releasing areas of tension at the top of the body, near the base of the skull, or at the base of the spine or tailbone. These are the areas that the spinal cord attaches. At the same time these are the areas of greatest restriction within a tongue tied child.

Furthermore, specific attention will be paid to releasing tension from the cranial structures (the skull), which also includes parts of the mouth. It's very gentle and doesn't cause any discomfort at all. The therapist will gently release these areas of tension with the amount of pressure known as "eye-ball" pressure – just enough pressure to help release the area of restriction. No less, no more than needed.

What about post-procedure therapy?

It aims to release the soft tissue restrictions that have compensated for the lack of tongue/lip movement. You will be given detailed cranio-sacral exercises, demonstrated in an easy way so that carers of the child can continue to do them later.

As practitioners, it is integral that we work closely together to achieve best results. To ensure the best outcomes it is worth to combine both body and the procedure together. The procedure is going to be better accepted by the patient and healing will be enhanced post revision.

Clinical observation has shown us that patients who have utilised both Chiropractic or Cranio-sacral care either side of frenectomy treatment have significantly less chance of needing further revision done.

There are also options for Bowen Therapy and Remedial Massage that will also assist pre and post lip and tongue tie treatment.

What are the benefits of Treatment?

There are a number of benefits of treatment that will have a positive impact on you and your family.

Initially, it will be the ability to undertake the primary function of feeding or improved speech function.

However the long-term benefits of the release of Lip and Tongue tie cover a range of jaw and facial formation that impact on breathing, mouth, jaw are outlined below.

Immediately after the procedure, infants are encouraged to be breastfed.

Treatment can help infants gain weight more steadily, and drink more comfortably as well.

However, it is recommended that you also see a lactation consultant.

Without treatment tongue-tie can cause the tongue to stay lower in the mouth than normal, causing the lower jaw to become more 'V' shaped than 'u' shaped.

This can cause the obvious aesthetic physical change, as well as causing swallowing to become more difficult, teeth to be more crowded, and therefore more likely to be crooked, and also for the upper and lower jaw to become uneven.

In persistent cases of tongue tie, the child may have certain speech problems.

In infants, tongue-tie can cause 'greedy' eating, where the infant swallows milk excessively fast.

This can, however, be an attempt by the infant to be able to breathe more rapidly.  In slightly older cases, the lower-held tongue makes swallowing harder and mouth breathing more likely, with the latter being bad for the tonsils and lungs.

Low tongue posture is a very common result of being tongue-tied.

This, however, has a range of negative impacts. It can cause the jaw to become more angular, and can also cause mouth-breathing and the jaw to become more cramped.

Tongue-tie can cause innumerable speech related problems as an infant grows older, as the limited movement of the tongue can limit pronunciation.

If the tongue can't reach the roof of the mouth, letters such as 'l' and 'd' cannot be properly pronounced, and if the tongue cannot arch on the bottom of the mouth letters like 'r' cannot be pronounced. Tongue-tie treatment easily nullifies these issues.

Tongue-tie can also lead to long-term issues such as snoring, noisy sleep and sleep apnoea.

This can cause disrupted sleep for the infant or child with tongue-tie and, in the case of older persons, can also cause disruptive sleep to that of the partner.

Snipping Vs Laser

As a parent, you have many difficult decisions to make for your child's welfare. That is why we want to make the decision between snipping and laser easy for you. Since we are talking about a baby, who is the most important in your whole world, it is crucial to make an informed choice and meet your little one's needs. That is why you should understand the differences between the procedures.

We encourage you to explore all the options where the Surgeons offer scissor snipping. You should also check if the Practitioner is well versed and if he offers you complete pre, during and aftercare. Making an informed decision is very important, as the understanding of the wider Medical and even Dental Profession is still evolving. One is for sure - the assumption that all tools provide the same results is not correct. A choice of tool should be determined by the age of the child, need of general anaesthetic, the cost of the tool or what post-surgery sutures are required.

The two main approaches are to cut with scissors/scalpel or to ablate with a laser. And it's likely that you will have to make a choice between those two.

Laser

Ablation (to remove or take away) by Laser is a process of vaporizing the tissue by heating it so that the water evaporates and remainder undergoes combustion in seconds. One of the best things about this approach is that the heating effect stops bleeding. By controlling the laser, we can minimise or even eliminate bleeding AND remove the tissue completely at the same time. No stitches, and no time waste, as a clear majority of the procedures can be done in a few minutes. Using a laser reduces the risk of infection, and may also have an analgesic effector boost wound healing, reducing pain.

Snipping

Snipping is usually undertaken with surgical scissors instead of laser. There are no cauterising or coagulating effects, and the area under the tongue is very vascular. To prevent bleeding, stitches or electrosurgery are used.

Thus, it might be impossible to fully release the tie underneath the membrane lining the mouth. When it comes to older children, it is more likely that stitches will be required. This is generally done under general anaesthetic.

When you compare Lasers with scissors, lasers do not crush or damage the tissues. The area around the laser wound will show less inflammation. At the same time, laser reduces the risk of re-attachment.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Craniofacial Therapy

Craniofacial therapy is when a chiropractor or osteopathic practitioner is enlisted to ease the side-effects of a tongue-tie. These side-effects may include a baby’s tightness in the neck or jaw caused from a baby straining to feed because of a tongue-tie. By gentle massage-like manipulation of the baby’s body, by a skilled craniofacial therapy specialist, these tight muscles soon release and allow for easier movement of the head.

In some cases, a craniofacial therapy approach may be needed before the tongue-tie surgery (otherwise known as a frenectomy) can be carried out. This is because the baby’s jaw may be so tight that it causes a restriction of the mouth which will not allow easy access to the frenulum (the troublesome piece of skin causing the tie). With a couple of sessions of craniofacial therapy these muscles, and those causing the soft pallet to tighten, actually release and the baby is then able to open their mouth wide enough to allow access for the surgery. Having this treatment prior to a frenectomy* also improves chances of a successful procedure. We provide outstanding comfort to both you and your baby before, during and after the procedure. Below is our room purposely designed for mothers and their babies.

lip tongue tie room

If your baby has been living with a tongue-tie and not feeding well, they may have developed some habits which have caused ineffectual feeding. This can, at times be painful for mum if the baby is breastfed. We have heard reports that with a successful frenectomy, followed by craniofacial therapy, a baby is able to correct the poor feeding habits which allows for a much more relaxed and effective feeding routine. Oftentimes this therapy may only be needed to release the tight muscles in the neck – which were caused by the tongue-tie. This then allows your baby to turn their head in order to gain better access to the breast.

Craniofacial Therapy is a gentle form of stretching and manipulation of the cranial muscles. The practitioner may also be required to provide gentle manipulation of the spine. It is recommended that only someone with specialist knowledge and practice conduct this form of therapy on infants.

Postoperative Care

Though the operation* takes mere minutes and may be unmemorable for your baby; the aftercare is very important to be able to provide the body with the best chance of healing.

Postoperatively the body will want to sew the wound back together and return the area to its original form. This is called primary intention and in this case, is not what we want to happen, because the wound could heal in a tighter and more troublesome manner. Therefore, you will be required to stretch and rub the wound area to stimulate it to heal differently.  This is called healing by secondary intention.

Healing by secondary intention is designed to encourage healing from the outside in, rather than the usual inside out. Healing by secondary intention will allow the frenectomy sight to heal without the usual tightness which occurs when a wound is healing.

lip tongue tie

To promote secondary healing in infants, our friendly staff at KIDS will encourage you to maintain breastfeeding, as the function of the mouth during the feed will stimulate movement in the operative area. However, breastfeeding alone does not provide enough stimulation for the area. Therefore, parents and caregivers will be required to perform manual stretching and rubbing exercises several times a day until the wound is healed.

We understand that this can be confronting for parents, however, our friendly team at KIDS will work with you to provide the manual stimulation and exercises you will be required to perform in the comfort of your own home. The stimulation is to be done gently, yet firmly and thoroughly, stretch, rub and press on and around the area of the wound. These types of therapies may cause mild discomfort or pain to the infant, which may result in them crying, however, we have found that they are instrumental in preventing reattachment. Therefore, we like to remind parents and caregivers that these activities are for the infant’s long-term benefit and that they must be done. As soon as they are completed you can comfort, coddle and feed your baby.

lip tongue tie

You may also be given additional exercises from your lactation consultant or bodyworker. These additional exercises are to be completed together with the recommended stretching exercises. The stretching exercises are to promote healing and minimal reattachment of the wound. The additional exercises are likely to address a different side-effect of the tongue-tie

The video below shows the technique for performing the stretching exercises correctly. You will also be shown how to perform them following the surgery.

(Pronounced: ankle-oh-gloss-eeah)

Did you know that everyone has fraena?

It is the fold of skin under your tongue. It also serves to join the lip to the adjacent gum. Originally it was thought that a tongue tie was when the frenum came all the way to the tip of the tongue. However, after much research and understanding, we now know that it is not just appearance but also movement, function and the overall workings of the tongue.

When a frenum becomes constrained to the normal functions of the mouth and face, it is then restrictive in comparison to a frenum that does not complete the full functions of the mouth and face. The reference of 'restriction' is used by those who are experienced in providing accurate diagnoses and treatments.

A failure of apoptosis (death of cells during the organism's growth or development) on the majority affects both the lip and tongue. This does not necessarily mean that both will always need treatment.

We will provide a thorough check to decide what treatments are best for your child. In our experience with breastfeeding infants, the lip nearly always contributes to the presenting symptoms.

For older children, assessment is based on clinical signs and symptoms. It's best to get your child assessed before bigger problems arise later on.

There is currently no way of telling exactly what lifelong implications are to a child if a tongue-tie and/or lip-tie is not rectified. However, there have been multiple studies to suggest several potential issues:

• Tongue Posture

• Tongue Thrusts

• Development of the jaw

Positioning of the teeth

• Mouth Breathing

• Reverse Swallowing

If you are concerned for your child's health bring them into KIDS to have a full and fun assessment. They won't want to leave!

Before jumping to conclusions, it is best to speak with your dentist to receive a full assessment of whether your child does have a lip or tongue tie. This will be completed with both a physical and manual examination. We understand kids want to play, that is why we have created fun spaces where they can enjoy themselves while we proceed with the assessment.

We will, firstly, provide a visual examination to determine if a lip and/or tongue tie exists. Unfortunately, you cannot determine purely from a visual examination, therefore we will also perform a palpation (using our hands to feel in the mouth). We also ask that you consult a Chiropractor, Speech Therapist and Lactation Consultant before we proceed.

At KIDS we want your child to be comfortable, so we will work with you and your child to make sure the experience is relaxing and enjoyable.

* Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Lasers are highly regulated in Queensland, requiring specific laser safety training, three separate licences – one for acquisition, another for possession and another for laser use.

All locations where lasers are used must undergo certification as suitable for use and users must comply with strict regulatory requirements. This is to make sure that only the trained professionals can offer you laser treatment.

We want you to be safe and that is why we are continually updating our certifications to give the utmost care.

Further, as you can imagine lasers are very expensive to acquire and in many dental practices will be the most valuable piece of equipment in the practice.

The application of anaesthetic will depend on the age of the patient and nature of the procedure*. However, infant frectonomies are commonly carried out without anaesthetic. This is because immediately following the procedure, infants are soothed by breast or bottle feeding and any degree of anaesthetic could impede their ability to soothe comfortably.

The laser we use has an analgesic effect following application, however, this does not usually remove all discomfort and infants may experience some pain during the brief period of surgery. In slightly older children who are not breastfeeding, we apply a strong topical anaesthetic gel to help relieve discomfort and pain.

We have found that for some children the taste of the anaesthetic gel is worse than the procedure.

* Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

There will always be some level of pain, which can be felt in all surgeries*. However, we work with you and your child to make sure that the procedure is as painless as possible and to stimulate healing.

ADULTS, YOUTH AND MOST CHILDREN

For adults, youth and most children, the procedure is performed under local anaesthetic.

TODDLERS AND SOME CHILDREN

Toddlers may have the application of a strong topical gel anaesthetic. This depends on whether the child is breastfeeding. We will advise you, before the procedure, how we will approach the application of the anaesthetic gel. We understand that children are not always interested in sitting still.

INFANTS

For infants, in accordance with guidelines of the Australian Dental Association, infant frenectomies are not carried out with a local anaesthetic. The infant procedure is carried out within 3-5 minutes and they are returned to their parents quickly and safely.

* Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Pain is very subjective and patients report a variety of pain levels following a frenectomy*. After a frenectomy, there will naturally be some associated discomfort or pain, mainly during eating.

If you are concerned please talk to the caring professionals at KIDS for your peace of mind.

* Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Each patient is different. During your consultations, we will provide you with the tools and knowledge of what to expect on the day.

We will also give you an estimate of the time it will take. This makes sure that we cover each individual case and make sure that you receive the topmost care while being with us at KIDS.

There are limited restrictions but we advise taking it easy for a couple of days post surgery*, and being mindful for at least 4 weeks afterwards. We highly advise against swimming or other medical procedures for 7 days after.

If you are concerned, we are here to help and please, if you do have any apprehensions please ask our friendly and professional staff.

* Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

We advise our patient's receive manual therapy in the 24 hours prior and within 48 hours after treatment. This is regardless of age. If you are concerned please talk to us. We are happy to set you through the process which may seem daunting, especially with an infant.

By having this therapy, the practitioner will be able to increase the suppleness and flexibility of the mouth, jaw, head and neck. This helps with showing the muscles the new habits and establishing new neural pathways. We want you to get the most out of the surgery and that is why we recommend you seek out a certified practitioner to complete this for you.

Unfortunately the procedure is not currently covered by Medicare. You will need to check with your private health insurance as it may be covered under your extras. The rebate will depend on your insurer and level of cover.

Sometimes, a health professional may only highlight a lip tie because a tongue tie, especially a posterior tie, can be difficult to identify without undertaking a full oral examination utilising the correct palpation technique.

In other cases, a health professional may hold the belief that a tongue tie is only an issue if it presents on the anterior (front) underside of the tongue.

KIDS will do a thorough examination to assess if your child has tongue tie as well.

Tomorrow’s smile depends on the dental care your kid gets today

Are you considering pre-orthodontics for your kid? Taking your kid to see a dentist early can prevent future problems and avoid surgery.

You already know the importance of taking your kid to the dentist and teaching them a good brushing and flossing habits early on. But you may not know that early visits to our pre-orthodontic dentists to review the development of a kid’s mouth and jaw can be just as helpful to their health and to your wallet.

Pre-orthodontic treatment aims to correct more serious bite related problems (malocclusions) as well as guide the jaw’s growth pattern.

Problems like overbites, underbites, jaw and tooth size, extra or missing teeth and improper jaw growth can lead to serious dental problems down the road. Harmful oral habits like thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, and mouth breathing can also lead to serious health problems.

Pre-orthodontics can treat poor oral habits and provide solutions to problems that may have been more about ‘watching and waiting’. Ultimately, pre-orthodontics does more than make a perfect smile – it creates a healthier kid.

To learn more about how a pre-orthodontic assessment might benefit your kid, arrange a complimentary consultation by contacting the KIDS Mackay team.

Gone are the days of “watch and wait.” Addressing your children’s dental issues when they’re younger can reduce the amount of time they spend in dental treatment down the track.

We recommend that every kid has an evaluation at around the age of 7 while their jaw is still growing. This allows us to evaluate your kid’s existing and incoming teeth and determine whether early treatment might be necessary.  At this early age, pre-orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but vigilant examination can anticipate the most ideal time to begin treatment for children that need it.

Regular visits to the dentists will enable you to keep track of your kid’s jaw and facial development. Once your kid reaches seven years of age; whether or not they show signs of needing pre-orthodontic care, you should schedule an appointment with us. We can then discuss with you the most appropriate treatment options and the best time to start treatment if it is required.

In the meantime, here are some signs to watch out for:

  • Early or delayed loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty chewing and/or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Thumb sucking after age five
  • Speech impediment
  • Protruding teeth
  • Shifting of the jaw when your kid opens or closes the mouth (crossbite)
  • Crowded front teeth around age seven

Early detection and treatment of your kid’s pre-orthodontic problems can mean the difference between a minimally invasive procedure now and complex surgery later.

When it’s done at the right time, pre-orthodontic treatment offers results that would be difficult or impossible to achieve at an older age without using more complex or invasive methods — for example, tooth extraction or jaw surgery.

Early treatment may give us the chance to:

  • Guide jaw growth and permanent teeth into a more favourable position
  • Lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth
  • Correct harmful oral habits
  • Improve facial appearance

By addressing the underlying causes of poorly developing jaws, rather than waiting to mechanically straighten teeth with braces, Dr Hany and his team of highly trained and dedicated staff can focus on delivering effective early preventative pre-orthodontic treatment. Here are some of the treatments we commonly use:

Myobrace: Myobrace therapy is used to help correct underlying functional problems that cause crooked teeth and bad bites. More than just straightening the teeth, we can often improve airway function, and positioning of the jaw; tongue; and soft tissue surrounding the mouth.

Aligners: An orthodontic aligner (or commonly known as Invisalign) treatment is a series of simple device (like retainers) that helps to correct your kids dental alignment.

Appliances: Various appliances (fixed or removable) are an effective tool for expanding the width and length of the jaws to accommodate the development of all your kid's teeth, improve their bite and also to break habits.
Expansion appliances has several other benefits too, including opening up the nasal passages for better breathing and sleep, minimise crowding and need for complex and lengthy treatment at a later stage.

Orofacial Myology: Underdevelopment of the jaw, a narrow palate and issues with tooth alignment, are directly related to muscle behaviour. The good news is, we can have a significant impact on all these things by working with children early on.

Appliances

A pre-orthodontic appliance is a simple device that helps to correct your kid’s bite, as well as sometimes address other health and dental conditions. There are several different kinds of retainers available, including fixed and removable, all of which are custom-made for your kid. We will recommend the type (or types) that will work best for your kid, and we'll tell you exactly when and how long they’ll need to be worn.

Appliances can provide beyond straight smiles

Appliances can help many health and dental concerns besides shifting teeth. We’ve had success using various appliances to treat a wide range of conditions.

Tongue thrusting

Tongue thrusting is the placement of the tongue in an incorrect position during swallowing. Appliances can be used to train the tongue to go to the roof of the mouth instead of pushing against the teeth and causing them to move. If not nipped in the bud, the tongue thrusting habit will continue to push the teeth out of alignment and compromise the results of any orthodontic work.

Misaligned bite (malocclusion)

Correcting a bite out of alignment can sometimes be achieved without the need for braces, depending on the severity of the misalignment. In these cases, a fixed or a removable appliance can be used to prevent teeth from shifting over time, which helps correct the kid’s bite and straighten their teeth.

Teeth grinding (bruxism)

Aside from dental issues, including misalignment and worn-down tooth enamel, teeth grinding can also cause jaw problems, ear pain and headaches. Various appliances can help by preventing your kid’s mouth from closing completely at night, stopping them from grinding their teeth.

Snoring and mouth breathing at night

For some kids, oral appliances can help their breathing and alleviate certain sleep-related complications. Any efforts to correct a kid’s breathing habits can pay great dividends in their overall health. It could likewise head off possible bite problems that can be both extensive and costly to treat in the future.

Thumb sucking

Persistent thumb or finger sucking can cause significant tooth misalignment or jaw deformation, including crossbite. Using an oral appliance will usually stop the habit, largely because the retainer changes the feeling of having the finger or thumb in the mouth, reducing the satisfaction.

If you would like more information on how an appliance might be of benefit to your kid, please contact us or schedule an appointment for a consultation.

The no braces approach to straightening teeth and jaws

Often touted as “straight teeth without braces”, the Myobrace system is delivering great results for our young patients.

Myofunctional habits & crooked teeth

You may not have heard the term ‘poor myofunctional habits’ before but chances are your kid has at least one of them. Mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, reverse swallowing, and thumb sucking…… they’re all poor myofunctional habits and they can all cause crowded teeth and incorrect jaw development.

Poor myofunctional habits are apparent before all permanent teeth are present, which means treatment of the causes can often begin as early as three years of age.

The advantage with myofunctional techniques is that they are used while a kid’s jaw is still growing, making it easier to fix their problems. In some cases, the use of myofunctional orthodontics can prevent the need for braces down the track. For children with severe oral problems, myofunctional orthodontics are used to make later orthodontic treatment like braces or clear aligners (Invisalign) an easier process.

Correcting the causes of crooked teeth with Myobrace

Myofunctional orthodontics is a pre-orthodontic method that focuses on addressing the underlying causes, and not just the look, of crooked teeth. At KIDS we may recommend Myobrace devices for your kid to treat poor oral habits that are often the underlying causes of crooked teeth.

The Myobrace is designed to deal with incorrect myofunctional habits by teaching children to breathe through their nose, rest the tongue in the roof of the mouth, and swallow correctly, while the jaw is widened.

The Myobrace System consists of a series of intra-oral appliances that are worn for one hour each day plus overnight while sleeping. The appliances assist in correcting poor oral habits while exerting light pressure to align the teeth and jaws.

In addition to wearing the Myobrace appliances, your kids complete a range of activities twice daily, which consist of a series of breathing, tongue, swallowing, lip and cheek exercises.

Think your kid might need an assessment?

If you are noticing early crowding of your kid’s teeth, arrange a complimentary Myobrace consultation.

In the meantime, check out our handy brochure that gives you an overview of Myobrace.

The Myobrace Treatment Stages

Myobrace treatment starts with habit correction, using a series of customised appliances designed to correct the causes of orthodontic problems at an older age and align the teeth as they grow into the mouth. Treatment can begin as soon as poor myofunctional habits are recognised, sometimes as young as 3 years old. For older children who have had more time for the incorrect habits and wrong growth patterns to establish, more time is typically required for a successful treatment outcome.

When it comes to getting on the road to a lifetime of good health for your kid, it's easy with our simple Myobrace approach.

Step A – Discuss your kid’s needs

At the first consultation, we will provide you with an overview of how the Myobrace treatment might work for your kid. This is the time when we prepare your kid’s clinical records and take impressions, photographs and x-rays if required.

Step B – Discuss your kid’s personalised treatment plan

At the second consultation we will discuss the treatment plan that has been prepared specifically for your kid. We will discuss with you the treatment time frame, the Myobrace appliances required, along with treatment costs and our very convenient payment plan options.

Step C – Receive the Myobrace Appliance

Your kid's third visit with us is where we start his or her journey for a healthy start to life. At this consultation, they will be fitted with their first Myobrace appliance. And he or she will also start the educational program. This is where the fun really begins! Each kid receives a customised Myobrace App, which has a range of exercises to help keep them on track during their treatment. The app can be downloaded from:

Step D – Regular appointments

Wearing the Myobrace appliance each day and overnight will give your kid the best results. They will get a series of exercises to do and we will check on their progress at each regular follow-up appointment. We will also check the progress of their movement with the Myobrace appliance.

Myobrace for Children - Myobrace Children Dentist in QLD

Three out of every four children have crowded teeth and incorrectly developing jaws. These problems are evident from as early as four years of age.

The optimal treatment age using the Myobrace System is from six to ten years of age, when the child is still developing. Treatment works best when combined with arch development and Myolay if necessary.

Modern research has shown that mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, reverse swallowing and thumb sucking (all of which are known as incorrect myofunctional habits) are the real causes of incorrect jaw development, crowded teeth, and other orthodontic problems. Furthermore, treatment and correction of these poor myofunctional habits are highly important because if left untreated they can cause a range of other large-scale health problems, such as sleep apnoea.

In the past Children Dentists or Orthodontists do not recommend any treatment before the age of 13; rather advising patients and parents to wait until all permanent teeth are present, and to then treat with braces and extractions. But braces and extractions do not address the real causes of crooked teeth and quite often once they are removed, the teeth crowd up again.

Myobrace for Kids™ corrects the true causes of crooked teeth as soon as the problems are evident, while the child's biological adaptability is greatest in their younger years. Improving these myofunctional habits at an early age allows for the child to have good dental alignment and improved jaw growth.

If you are concerned that your child is suffering from one of the above myofunctional habits then book an appointment so we can show you how Myobrace can improve your child's health.

Once the permanent teeth are present in the teenage years, the Myobrace System becomes less effective than if treatment was started during childhood. Because the longer you've had poor myofunctional habits, the more difficult they are to correct. Treatment with the Myobrace System can still work for teenagers when combined with arch expansion. The sooner treatment is started the better because the longer the poor myofunctional habits are in place the more likely additional alignment with braces may be required.

The Myobrace for Teens™ is a no-braces alternative to straightening teeth. Treatment involves using a series of removable orthodontic appliances combined with daily exercises to train the oral muscles and produce straighter teeth and a healthier, better-looking smile.

The underlying cause of crooked teeth is poor muscle function which is often created by poor myofunctional habits. Mouth breathing, swallowing incorrectly, and overactive facial muscles can all contribute to an unhealthy jaw and teeth. Once these habits are improved, straightening the teeth becomes a much more simple process.

Myobrace treatment is simple. It does not involve wearing braces or using complex and uncomfortable dental appliances 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Wearing a Myobrace appliance for one to two hours each day and while sleeping, combined with a few simple and effective exercises each day, is all it takes to make your teen's smile as healthy as possible.

To find out more please contact our office.

Many adults would like straighter teeth and an improved smile. But they are also worried that some of the more traditional orthodontic solutions are not suitable for them, whether for social or professional reasons or due to personal preference. Many may even have had braces but their teeth have crowded up again.

Research shows that after by 15 years of age, when all permanent teeth are present and the jaws have stopped growing, the bone around the teeth is hardened. Dental work on older patients' teeth can make them more prone to damage from orthodontic appliances. In traditional adult orthodontic treatment, all of these factors can contribute to less stable results and likely long-term or permanent retainers being required if poor oral habits have not been corrected.

Myobrace for Adults™ works to align the teeth and correct the poor oral habits (also known as myofunctional habits) that are the real causes of crooked teeth and poor jaw growth. This process can straighten teeth without the need for complex retainers or braces.

If you suffer from a clicking jaw, frequent head or neck pain, or grind your teeth, then you may have a Temporormandibular Joint (TMJ) problem. Some Myobrace Providers can also offer patients treatment for these problems.

To find out more please contact our office.

Myobrace is an pre-orthodontic approach that straightens the teeth and jaw without braces.

Myobrace addresses any health issues caused by misaligned teeth. It also corrects the underlying issues that originally caused the misalignment of teeth. Factors such as mouth breathing, tongue thrusting and incorrect swallowing impact the form and function of the teeth.

In recent decades the medical and dental professions have become more aware of Sleep Disorder Breathing (SDB) acting as a major contributor to a range of health problems.

In addition to having a negative impact on mood, energy levels, ability to regulate stress, behavioural problems and emotional well-being, severe sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea, have been associated with the causes of life-shortening events such as heart disease or stroke.

SDB characteristically occurs when the flow of air through the nose or mouth is obstructed during sleep. While this airflow obstruction is typically caused by relaxation and poor muscle tone around the throat and jaws, there are many other underlying causes of SDB.

The most common of these are chronic mouth breathing, poor diet, obesity and poor development of the jaws. Additionally, orthodontics with extractions can exacerbate breathing issues.

Normal nose breathing vs mouth breathing:

Mouth breathing is abnormal and is one of the causes of Sleep Disorder Breathing (SDB) problems. If a child breathes through their mouth the jaws will not develop forwards correctly.

Adults who have SDB will usually have underdeveloped jaws, which cause the tongue and lower jaw to restrict the airway. Therefore, it is important to re-learn to breathe correctly, through the nose, at all times so the lower jaw and tongue are held forward and the airway is kept open.

How Myobrace can help

At KIDS Mackay, we can carry out an assessment of your child's breathing issues and, in consultation with your GP or sleep practitioner, we can correct your child's snoring. By using the Myobrace System we able to correct your child's mouth breathing or jaw development issue. By using the Myobrace activities your child will retrain their tongue and jaw muscles so as to promote a more natural breathing practice. In doing so your child will avoid a lifetime of snoring and disturbed sleep.

Headaches, facial and neck pain, and many other symptoms can be caused by Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder. These symptoms may only have started recently, or could potentially have caused discomfort for many years.

The symptoms of TMJ disorder can differ from patient to patient, making diagnosis troublesome.

WHAT IS TMJ DISORDER?

Many people suffer from TMJ Disorder for years without correct diagnosis. The disorder is often not well understood by Doctors, Dentists and other health professionals.

The Temporomandibular Joints (TMJs) are the jaw joints connecting the lower jaw (mandible) to the head at the temple region. Each time you chew, talk and swallow the TM joints move and function. They are the most frequently used joints in the body.

You can locate your TM joints by pressing your fingertips immediately in front of your ear on each side of the area just in front of the ear canal. If you have TMJ disorder this may be painful and some clicking in the joint is often present.

TMJ Disorder has a wide variety of symptoms which affect the head, ears, eyes and neck.

COULD YOU BE SUFFERING FROM TMJ DISORDER?

Pain and discomfort in the head, jaw and neck are very common symptoms of TMJ Disorder. These symptoms may be resolved with very simple solutions, but often treatment can seem very complex and frustrating for both patient and Doctor. Understanding that the 'bite' could be the problem can be a foreign concept to many people. This field of craniomandibular dentistry has however been around for nearly a century.

Myobrace can help rid you of your TMJ Disorder. By the wearing the Myobrace appliance and engaging with the Myobrace activities, your jaw can be strengthened and reshaped so as to make chewing, swallowing and even talking more comfortable and natural.

For more information about TMJ Disorder or see how KIDS Mackay can help you with your TMJ Disorder please contact our office.

Bruxism is the Myofunctional habit of clenching or grinding your teeth and it is most common at night.

The term clenching means tightly clamping your top and bottom teeth together, especially the back teeth. The stressful force of clenching causes pressure on the muscles, tissues and other structures around your jaw. This can lead to jaw joint disorders, jaw pain and soreness, headaches, earaches, damaged teeth and other problems. These symptoms are often collectively referred to as Temperomandibular Joint Dysfuntion or "TMJ" disorder.

Many people who clench also grind their teeth. Grinding is when you slide your teeth over each other, generally in a sideways, back-and-forth movement. This action may wear down your teeth and be noisy enough at night to bother sleeping partners. Like clenching, grinding can lead to jaw pain and other problems.

Bruxism can be caused generally by:

  • Chronic pain (e.g. could be a painful nerve in the foot, compressed inflamed disc in the spine, or a painful osteoarthritic hip)
  • Struggling to breathe through a compromised airway (sleep apnoea ie cessation of breathing for 10 seconds)
  • Life's anxieties (stressful personal problems, discomfort with living space, etc)
  • Or even multiples of the above!

Presentation to a dentist or a doctor will be with headaches, facial pain, limited opening of the jaws, jaw noises (popping and clicking), Bruxism (grinding and clenching), worn teeth, broken teeth, night breathing disrupted by a sleep disorder, such as sleep apnoea, snoring etc.

It is important to understand that the head and the face are the monitors of the health of the body. The chewing muscles are in balance with the muscles in front of the neck and the muscles in the back of the neck. These muscles have a particular amount of activity and tone which is based on the stimulation it gets from the brain and the spinal cord (Central Nervous System). People clench, grind or both because of increased stimulation from the brain or spinal cord (Central Nervous System) which directly results from various amounts of pain, breathing dysfunction or anxiety leading to a breakdown of the toughest joint in the body.

Migraine, cluster headaches, hypnic headache, morning (tension) headache in both adults and children are related to sleep apnoea and disturbed sleep. Headaches have been found in 65% of patients with nocturnal bruxism (night time grinding).

People who grind their teeth use three times more force than a person who doesn't, when chewing.

Bruxism happens as a subconscious activity and therefore unawareness of the activity is common. People grind their teeth more when they are on their backs and they also suffer more sleep apnoea in that position.

The basic outline of treatment is to initially treat the cause of bruxism. The need for treating chronic pain, breathing and sleep disorders and anxiety is necessary to stop a person from bruxing.

Special orthotics/splints that are designed to maximise function and proper breathing, may have to be worn during the day and/or night. The treatment generally lasts for about 3 to 6 months. This is generally called the Phase 1 of treatment. If symptoms return then we need to go to Phase 2 of treatment that involves either orthodontics (braces, invisalign) or prosthodontic (crowns/veneers) rehabilitation.

In general practice, seven out of every ten patients improve dramatically after this treatment. If suffering from sleep disorders then the night orthotics may have to be worn for life to ensure that you continuously get the long, refreshing sleep you deserve.

Why not book an appointment online to see how KIDS Mackay can help your child eliminate Bruxism.

Mouth Breathing Risks

Mouth breathing is unhealthy as it puts you at higher risk of:

  • Colds
  • Tonsillitis
  • Coughs
  • Chest infections

This is because mouth breathing bypasses your body's main air filtration system - the nose! The nose acts as an 'air-conditioner' that filters and humidifies the air we breathe.

When you breathe through your mouth you drag large volumes of cold, unfiltered air containing viral and bacterial matter directly into the sensitive lung passages. This increases your chance of developing colds, coughs and/or chest infections.

Ever notice how the back of your throat feels a little sore when you're recovering your breath after a run? That's because, by reflex, we breathe through our mouths when running to try to regain our breath. This subjects the tonsils to heavy air filtration duties which they are not designed to undertake. In most cases, the tonsils will become swollen and inflamed as a result – which is not a comfortable result!

John Flutter Dental offer "Breathing Retraining Programs" for children and adults. At KIDS Mackay we can also undertake an assessment of the causes of your child's mouth breathing. Through the use of the Myobrace device and exercises, we will be able to correct the cause of your child's mouth breathing.

Did you know...

• 3 out of 4 children have crowded teeth and incorrectly developing jaws. These problems can be seen from a very early age.

• Crowded teeth, incorrect jaw development and related orthodontic problems are NOT caused by big teeth in a small jaw or hereditary factors.

• Incorrect Myofunctional Habits made up of Mouth Breathing, reverse swallowing, thumb sucking and tongue thrusting all contribute to a range of related issues.

• Incorrect jaw development is generally caused by allergies, asthma and open mouth breathing.

Getting braces with or without extraction does not address the underlying causes of crooked teeth. This is why once braces are removed, the teeth usually move and start to crowd up and misalign again. It is therefore important to understand that treatment with braces just by themselves will usually require the installation of retainers for the rest of the patient's life to prevent the teeth from moving.

Soft Tissue Dysfunction

We understand that some of this information can be overwhelming. That is why we want to help parents understand what the causes of crooked teeth are. In children, a normal upper jaw is formed when the tongue rests in the area between the upper teeth (the palate).

When the tongue is in this position, it counteracts the pressure of the cheeks. If the tongue is not maintained in the correct position, the teeth move inward and create crooked teeth and a narrow jaw.

If the lips and tongue are not functioning correctly, the crowded teeth and jaws will then create a misaligned jaw and crooked teeth. If the jaw shape and function are not correct, there is insufficient room for teeth in the mouth.

Some or all of these things can create other problems like anxiety, rob kids of confidence, and generally, make them feel unhappy.

Correcting the problems

Myobrace appliances and training approaches have been created to correct poor Myofunctional Habits in children by re-training the oral muscles. Here at KIDS we have the treatment to determine and address the underlying issue. This will have the benefit of correcting the form and function of the teeth which may also result in straight teeth without the need for braces and retainers. By re-training with Myobrace it is possible to improve the function, form and posture of the mouth for a lifetime of benefits.

Of course, treatment with Myobrace is non-invasive and will promote happiness and confidence in your child.

Reverse swallowing, also known as a tongue thrust, is a Myofunctional Habit where the tongue protrudes through the anterior incisors during swallowing, speech and when the tongue is at rest.

The motion of this action reduces the space for the front and back teeth - including the wisdom teeth. If allowed to continue, this action can cause a reduction in the growth potential of the jaw and face during your child's growing years.

Correction of this Myofunctional Habit, using the Myobrace System, will allow the teeth, jaws and face to reach full genetic potential by encouraging the teeth to move into their correct position naturally.

For more information please contact our office.

Factors such as mouth breathing, tongue thrusting and incorrect swallowing all impact the form and function of the teeth. The Myobrace System is designed to address these root cause issues which impact on the look and form of your kid's teeth, for long term health of the mouth and body.

The Myobrace device trains the tongue to apply light pressure on the hard palate which, over time, will allow the palate to reshape. Coupled with the Myobrace activities and correct tongue placement, the teeth align to their designated position, often, without extractions.

To understand how poor oral habits affect the way the teeth and jaws grow, take a moment to watch the video below. It also explains how correcting these habits can align the teeth and jaws, as well as help your kid to reach their full genetic potential.

For more information on how Myobrace works, please contact KIDS Mackay.

It is a common belief that crowded teeth, incorrect jaw development and other orthodontic problems are caused by either large teeth in small jaws or other hereditary factors.

Modern research has shown that mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, reverse swallowing and thumb sucking - known as incorrect myofunctional habits - are the real causes of incorrect jaw development. Allergies, asthma and an open mouth posture can also contribute towards jaws developing incorrectly.

Bottle feeding, thumb sucking, and dummies during the early stages of a child's life can also contribute to the problem.

at KIDS Mackay we can show you how to correct these poor myofunctional habits early before they cause problems down the track. Alternatively, if your child has started to develop crooked teeth, we can still show you how to correct the poor myofunctional habits, however, your child may still need assistance from the Myobrace system.

To find out more please contact us or book an appointment so we can show you.

Myobrace treatment involves using a series of appliances which have the proven dual function of correcting habits that cause poor dental development, while also providing light forces to align the teeth into their natural position. This technique is now used by practitioners in more than 100 countries worldwide. However, KIDS Mackay is the ONLY practice in the greater central/northern Queensland region offering the Myobrace treatment plan!

Treatment works in two phases. The first involves wearing a Myobrace appliance for one to two hours each day and overnight while sleeping. The second is a series of 'myofunctional exercises' (also known as Trainer Activities) which are to be completed daily. This is all it takes for a real change to occur.

The exercises work to strengthen the tongue and jaw muscles. These strengthened muscles help to relieve pressure on the gums and teeth. The Myobrace device, through gentle pressure, helps to reshape and potentially widen the palate. Both the device and the exercises also help to correct tongue posture so as to create more space for the teeth to realign and straighten.

To find out more please contact our office or book an appointment online

The total time required for a 'month by month' basis for Myobrace is usually comparable to the time required for treatment with braces. But instead of being fixed to the teeth, Myobrace appliances are removable and require just one to two hours of use each day plus overnight while sleeping.

More information can be found in 'The Advantages over traditional methods' page on this website.

The Myobrace System is a bit like a training program. Like study or sport, daily commitment and persistence are required to obtain the best results. It also depends on the patient's inherent biology for change - therefore sometimes the results are rapid and other times it may take more perseverance.

For more information on treatment for adults please click here.

Old habits die hard, so the sooner the training program starts the better!

To get started with Myobrace please book an appointment by clicking here.

Normally the cost of Myobrace Treatment is comparable to braces.

An exact fee structure will be presented upon evaluation and consultation, however, treatment fees may vary depending on the number of visits required, the patient's responsiveness with the device, how well the patient performs the activities prescribed to them, and how quickly the patient responds to the treatment.

If treatment is started while the patient is younger, generally treatment will cost less than if left untreated for several years. This is because younger patients jaw bones are easier to mould and correct as they have not yet hardened with age.

No. Although over the first few days there may be a small amount of sensitivity, after a few days of treatment this sensitivity should cease.

Most of the Myobrace treatment is carried out in our office at 6 Discovery Lane, Mackay.

Initial consultations and follow-ups may be carried out in our various other offices in Central Queensland. To find out if this service is offered at your local practice please contact us.

The best time to begin treatment is while the patient is still growing and the first permanent teeth appear (around 6 to 10 years of age).

If poor myofunctional habits are discovered early, it is best to start treatment immediately before those habits can cause too much damage to the jaw structure.

Patients over 15 years can be treated but problems/habits causing the crooked teeth are often more difficult to change, and will likely be a long process.

To begin treatment, please book online

The aim of Myobrace treatment is not just to have straight teeth, but also to remove the bad influences on the patient's dental and facial development. As a result of improving poor muscular habits, patients can experience better facial development and achieve their full genetic potential.

Other health benefits include improved posture, fewer allergies, fewer problems with the teeth, mouth and jaw joints (TMJ). Patients can also expect to experience improved breathing and improved sleep.

To get started on a better, healthier life for your child, book an appointment now.

For the best result, the appliances must be worn daily for 1 to 2 hours plus overnight while sleeping.

As well as wearing the appliance you may need to perform a few simple activities that re-train the oral muscles and help motivate you to improve your overall treatment outcome.

If the patient refuses to wear the Myobrace appliance then the treatment will be extremely ineffective as the success of Myobrace is through wearing the appliance. This will be reinforced with the patient at the first consultation.

Myobrace is not an alternative form of orthodontics. It is a treatment for underlying causes of crooked teeth and poor muscular habits of the mouth and face. Therefore we cannot stress enough how important it is to wear the appliance.

During the Myobrace treatment, we will closely monitor the stability of treatment.

Normally if the myofunctional problems are corrected, the teeth will stay in position. However, if there is some movement of the teeth after treatment it is important that you contact us.

To date, there have been no reported harmful side effects from the Myobrace treatment.

We review our patient's progress regularly to ensure the muscle improvements are progressing and that changes in alignment of teeth and jaws are being supported by the surrounding muscle structures. During these consultations, we also take time to ensure that there is no irritation caused by the appliance.

If there are any concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.

Some limitations do exist. The Myobrace System requires daily use over an extended period of time and therefore non-compliant patients will not achieve a satisfactory result.

Age is also a significant factor as the older the patient is, the more difficult it is to change habits and move the teeth. Patients with extremely crooked teeth and jaw discrepancies, which stop said patient from physically holding the Myobrace appliance in their mouth, can limit treatment possibilities.

Complete nasal obstruction can also make Myobrace treatment difficult.

There may be other limiting factors and so it's best to speak with a our Myobrace Practitioner if you have any concerns.

Seek a second opinion on all treatment options. Pre-Orthodontics provides for options of addressing underlying issues while your child is growing. This has the benefit of addressing the issue at an early age, but also in the long term can save time, money and pain of more complex procedures.

A watch and wait approach is not necessarily the best option based on the type of treatment that is required. For example, a child that snores, will not 'grow out of it' as they get older.

Normally the cost of Pre-Orthodontic Treatment is comparable to braces.

The total time required for a 'month by month' basis for Pre-Orthodontics is usually comparable to the time required for treatment with braces. But instead of being fixed to the teeth, Myobrace appliances are removable and require just one to two hours of use each day plus overnight while sleeping.

One of the treatment options that may be offered as part of Pre-Orthodontic Treatment is Myobrace. Myobrace uses a combination of exercises, appliances and training to get the optimal treatment outcomes. Just the same as Clear Aligners could be seen as just plastic, Myobrace treatment offers much more than just retainers.

Pre-Orthodontics is more than just aligning teeth

As dentists with advanced training in growth and development, Dr Hany along with the KIDS team can choose from a variety of techniques and appliances to correct bite problems. One of these is the palatal expander, which is used to create more room for an adolescent's permanent teeth.

Palatal expansion is a form of pre-orthodontic treatment that is often useful in the early intervention of orthodontic problems in children. It works by gradually widening the bones of the palate (roof of the mouth), before they have permanently fused. By creating a wider dental arch, there is more space for the teeth to align without the need for extractions. Expansion appliances are custom-made and can be affixed to the inside or the outside of the teeth.

Palatal expansion is a particularly useful treatment for children with the following dental concerns:

Impacted Teeth
Crossbite
Crowded Teeth

These conditions can be corrected by widening the palate to make room for all of your kid's teeth and improve their bite.

Palatal Expanders: beyond correcting crooked teeth

Palatal expanders are an effective tool for treating issues beyond straight teeth for your kid. The use of palatal expanders has several other benefits, including opening up the nasal passages for better breathing and sleep.

Even when no dental crowding is evident, a narrow palate makes it difficult for the tongue to rest as it should in the roof of the mouth. In young children, lowered tongue posture is associated with poor palate and facial development, sleep disordered breathing, and even speech problems.

It has been well established that narrow palates put kid at risk of developing obstructive sleep apnoea. This is because poor palate development narrows air passages and can cause a kid to mouth breathing and snoring. Obstructive sleep apnoea is a serious breathing problem associated with increased risk of neurocognitive and behavioural problems in children, and many health risks into adulthood.

Palatal Expansion appliance (removable)

Benefits of early palatal expansion

Good resting tongue posture and nasal breathing are essential for good palatal development.  Expanding the palate allows more room for the tongue to rest and function properly in the roof of the mouth.  When this is done earlier in life when there is most growth potential remaining, there is greater potential to improve a kid's facial and airway development.

Using a palatal expander early in the dental process can greatly improve the function of the jaw and mouth in just 3-6 months. Even very small increases in the width of the palate can lead to dramatic improvements in nasal airflow.

Contemporary research tells us that children that had undergone palatal expansion experienced a marked reduction in obstructive sleep apnoea, and, interestingly, significant improvements in bedwetting.

Palatal expansion may be the only intervention required or may be the first step in addressing your kid’s pre-orthodontic needs. The only way to know for certain is to come and see us.

A contemporary, multi-disciplinary approach for children

With traditional orthodontics, the focus has been on moving the teeth into a better position without addressing the underlying problem (orofacial disorders). Orofacial Myology (also known as Myofunctional Therapy) uses exercises and techniques to retrain the tongue, lips, and jaw to correct functional irregularities of the face and mouth.

Treatment involves short exercises that train the muscles to function properly. You could consider this as a bit like a gym for the mouth that builds up the muscles.

Orofacial myology is an excellent inter-disciplinary option that can help prevent orofacial disorders from worsening over time, particularly in children. The best part is that therapy is non-invasive, uses no drugs, and has proven results.

Tongue thrust treated with oral myology and result

What are Orofacial Disorders?

Orofacial disorders are problems with oral and facial muscles that open the dental bite beyond a normal resting or functional range and can be caused by:

  • thumb and finger sucking
  • prolonged use of dummies
  • an open mouth position
  • forward resting position of the tongue
  • tongue thrusting
  • airway restriction
  • cheek or nail biting
  • teeth clenching or grinding
  • structural or physiological abnormalities

Why is it important to fix these issues in children?

Orofacial disorders can lead to abnormal dental development in children, resulting in malocclusion (misalignment of teeth), cosmetic problems, abnormal jaw growth, and speech problems.

The structure of the face has a direct impact on function, meaning that without addressing structure we can’t influence function. To give an example; where a kid has an open bite, narrow jaw, or high and narrow palate, it may not be possible to resolve certain speech difficulties. In another example; a narrow palate (which also forms the base of the nasal cavity), means that the airway will be restricted and issues with mouth breathing, snoring, or sleep apnoea could develop.

Orofacial Myology complements orthodontic treatment, where addressing and managing the muscle imbalances that cause crooked teeth can achieve more stable long term results.  In children, this will help to avoid extractions or more invasive jaw surgery at a later stage. Importantly, it will also address a number of health concerns that could develop as children age.

How will orofacial myology benefit my kid?

Underdevelopment of the jaw, a narrow palate and poor tooth alignment, are directly related to muscle behaviour. Orofacial myofunctional therapy can teach your kid normal rest positions for the tongue and lips, eliminate harmful habits, and correct swallowing patterns associated with tongue thrusting. Therapy can also improve appearance, help teeth to erupt normally, and help with maintaining results following later orthodontic treatment.

The good news is, we can positively impact all these things by working with children early on. The best time to correct muscular habits is under the age of 9, before the palate has knitted together.

Some of the common reasons we use orofacial myology in children include:

eliminating habits such as thumb or finger sucking
replacing the habit of mouth breathing with nasal breathing
muscle exercises following the release of lingual frenums (known as tongue ties)
establishing normal swallowing patterns and helping to eliminate tongue thrusts that can contribute to open-bites

Evaluation and therapy should be provided by a professional who has been specifically trained as an orofacial myologist/myofunctional therapist. In addition to orthodontists practicing Orofacial Myology, we have a Speech Pathologist as part of the KIDS team. This holistic team approach means that we can offer your kid therapy that can be coordinated with traditional dental or pre-orthodontic treatment.

All treatment begins with a no-stress, no-obligation consultation to discuss your kid’s needs. Book a consultation to get the process started.

Braces & Aligners: what’s best for your kid?

When considering braces for their kid, we are often asked by parents about the benefits of Invisalign aligners vs. Braces. Both are great options – but which one is right for your kid?

Fixed braces: the options

Fixed braces are still the primary means for straightening teeth and correcting misaligned bites in children. In more complex cases, braces can provide more predictable results. Braces work by using brackets and wires that apply continuous gentle pressure to slowly move the teeth into the desired position - improving the appearance and function of crooked or poorly arranged teeth.

Fixed braces are not the shiny mouthful of metal of years past. Many more options are now available, including the choice of metal or ceramic.

Metal Braces

They are also the ideal choice for younger teens because they are the most flexible and can change with your kid’s needs. The downside is that they aren’t at discreet as ceramic braces or clear aligners.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces work the same way as metal braces but have the advantage of being made from a clear ceramic material that blends in better with your kid’s teeth.

Invisalign – Clear Aligners

If your kid has a malocclusion but is concerned by the look of traditional braces, Invisalign can be a great choice. This method uses custom-made, clear, removable trays that put pressure on the teeth, moving them gradually into their correct position. Removable appliances, such as Invisalign, are typically worn for a fixed period per day, and may be easily taken off as needed.

If you’re thinking about clear aligners for your kid, you’ve most likely heard of the very popular Invisalign Clear Aligners.

Invisalign clear aligners are…

Discreet. Invisalign are clear, making for a discreet orthodontic treatment.
Removable. When it comes time to eat a meal or clean the teeth, the aligner can be removed without the need for help from mum or dad.
Convenient. There are no adjustments. Your kid will simply remove their current set of aligners and replace them as needed.

Invisalign right for my kid?

Deciding between braces and Invisalign is about much more than aesthetics. Invisalign can be effective in treating mild to moderate pre-orthodontic problems. For anything more complex, fixed braces are generally needed for more comprehensive treatment. Invisalign is usually not suitable for young children as their design is such that they can only move teeth efficiently in a fully developed adult position. We are also very proud to be Platinium Invisalign Provider.

Retain your kid’s beautiful new smile

Once the teeth are straight, and the smile is flawless, it would be great if the story ended there but removal of braces or Invisalign isn’t the end of your kid’s pre-orthodontic treatment.

If you want your beautiful new smile to last a lifetime - without undoing all the time, effort, and money you’ve invested - it's essential a retainer is worn indefinitely. Teeth tend to shift, so a retainer can help keep them where they are supposed to be until they are settled in.

Retainers are an important phase of the post-treatment process once a misaligned bite has been corrected with braces. We are very proud to be a Platinium Invisalign Provider.

At KIDS, we can help your kid enjoy straight teeth by carefully advising you on the treatment that’s perfect for their needs. Discover what braces or aligners Invisalign can do for your kid booking an online consultation.

What is Orofacial Myology?

You might be wondering what the words 'Orofacial Myology' means or how an exercise program may help you or your child.

Orofacial Myology is defined as the treatment of the orofacial musculature to improve muscle tone and establish the correct function of the tongue, lips, and jaw.

At KIDS we work with patients who are experiencing complications related to the muscles in the face, jaw, lips, tongue and/or neck. Helping both adults and children to get your muscles working as they should. These muscles can affect how you eat, breathe, sleep, and impact your overall health and well being.

We aren't interested in band-aid solutions. Our approach is all about treating the cause, not the symptoms. We use strategies and exercises to overcome orofacial disorders that develop from the abnormal lip, jaw or tongue position during rest, swallowing or speech, or that are caused by prolonged oral habits such as thumb sucking, nail biting or lip tucking (tucking bottom lip behind front teeth).

All patients (above the age of 2) that are having a tongue or lip ties revised at KIDS are required to carry out OM therapy prior to and post-release to ensure the best possible outcome of their treatment.

We understand that proper oral function is critical for proper development and that reduced tongue mobility can lead to high arch palates, narrow jaws, and elongated soft palates. This may then result in more serious conditions such as Sleep Disorder Breathing or Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

We carry out a range of OM Programs for different age groups and concerns;

OM for Adults

OM for Snoring

OM and Orthodontics

OM for Kids

Jaw Play for Toddlers

Thumbsucking Program

On behalf of your and/or your child's wellbeing, our Orofacial Myologist will provide you with a fun, engaging program to ensure the best possible outcome for your treatment.

What does an OM Program involve?

An OM program generally consists of 8 to 12 fortnightly visits, involving short exercises that train your muscles to function correctly. Timeframes for treatment can vary depending on each individual. At each visit, we will monitor your progress. We will also take photos and measurements at intervals so you can see the changes that are taking place.

We've seen first-hand what this treatment can do for other patients and we love seeing the difference it has made to their day-to-day lives. We're committed to achieving these results for you too!

OM for Kids

Has your dentist or orthodontist mentioned that your child or teen might have a “tongue thrust?”

Has your child been in speech therapy for some time with little gains toward increasing ability to make new sounds/words or increase intelligibility of speech?

Does your child produce a lot of speech sounds with their tongue too far forward in their mouth?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, your child may benefit from what is known as Orofacial Myology.

It’s important to note that most orofacial disorders develop at an early age when children are developing rapidly. At KIDS we believe it’s important to ensure the muscles are working properly at this age to avoid problems and ensure normal growth and development can occur as your child grows.

Common issues we see in children are;

  • open mouth posture,
  • forward head posture,
  • crowded teeth,
  • incorrect chewing function,
  • altered speech patterns,
  • tongue thrusting (an incorrect swallowing pattern),
  • short upper lip,
  • incorrect tongue rest position (such as forward resting posture),
  • noisy/messy eating,
  • excessive drooling,
  • bedwetting,
  • snoring/grinding.

These issues can be caused by;

  • mouth breathing,
  • thumb/finger sucking,
  • clothes chewing,
  • prolonged pacifier use,
  • nail-biting
  • cheek and lip biting
  • enlarged tonsils/adenoids,
  • nasal blockages/allergies,
  • a narrow and/or high arch palate,
  • tongue and/or lip restrictions

How can we help?

At KIDS we take a holistic approach to treating your child's health issues. We will work with you and your child on things like;

  • screening for possible sleep/developmental/airway issues (Airways and Sleep in Children)
  • training the muscles to function properly,
  • focus on correcting chewing and swallowing patterns,
  • fun, simple exercises to incorporate into your daily routine, and
  • empowering your child with the skills and knowledge to kick their oral habits.

With the help of Orofacial Myology, your child can be on their way to a happy, healthy future without the need for invasive treatment or surgery. Contact us today to book an appointment.

Jaw Play for Toddlers

What is Jaw Play?

At KIDS we are able to assess your child's jaw and facial development from a young age. We are able to pick up on incorrect rest posture and/or swallowing patterns from infancy. Obviously, this age is too young for us to carry out an OM program as it relies on your child's cooperation and compliance. However, we believe that the earlier these issues are addressed the better chance your child has to achieve optimal development as they grow.

How can we help?

Proper growth and development are facilitated by the parental provision of good and appropriate feeding and mouthing experiences. To help you, we can provide some fun and simple strategies for you and your child to implement at home. That way you have an understanding of what to look out for as they grow. You may even find the strategies apply to other members of the family as well.

We recommend coming in for 3 monthly visits so that we can help to monitor your child's development and incorporate new activities as they master new skills, therefore ensuring that they are reaching developmental milestones and receiving appropriate mouthing skills to achieve optimal health and well-being.

This can be carried through until approx. 4 years of age when they are then able to progress onto further treatment (if required) and ensures that we are monitoring their development during those crucial years of growth.

What else should I know?

At KIDS we strongly agree that prevention is better than a cure. Therefore we recommend that you;

  • Breastfeed at least through the first year,
  • Get tongue and lip ties revised as early as possible,
  • Do daily tummy time for at least 15 minutes per time,
  • Throw out the pacifier by 4 months old, and before that age, only allow pacifier use during bedtime,
  • Encourage babies to chew (as long as safe) while teething (this is very important and assists with developing a mature swallow),
  • Use ONLY straw-based sippy cups or preferably use an open cup, and
  • Monitor your children for chronic nasal congestion, treating as needed to prevent mouth-breathing habits.

To be clear, while bottle-feeding does influence orofacial myology, disorders are more likely due to long-standing, excessive pacifier use, thumb-sucking, and chronic nasal congestion especially due to untreated allergies. Sometimes no cause can be found. Genetics and nutritional deficiencies may also be contributing factors.

We love helping to grow healthy, happy little faces. Call us today to book in for an appointment for your little one.

Thumbsucking Program

Did you know that thumb sucking can cause speech issues and impact the development of your child's airways, face, and jaws?

Thumb sucking is often thought of as just a habit that your child will grow out of but prolonged thumb sucking can cause so many problems for your little one including;

  • tongue thrust,
  • excessive overjet/overbite,
  • incorrect jaw and facial development,
  • high and narrow arch palate,
  • errors with speech articulation (such as a lisp,
  • nail and skin infections,
  • repeated worm infections.

It's important to note that if your child needs to have speech therapy or orthodontic treatment due to a thumb sucking habit it is important to stop the habit first.

How can we help?

Our Certified Thumbsucking Clinic Provider will ensure that both you and your child understand why they are sucking in a fun and informative discussion with no judgement or criticism. Thumb sucking is often an addiction and we understand how difficult and frustrating it can be.

We believe in taking a personalised approach, listening and understanding, and high-fives. Our goal is to help families escape the frustrations of thumb sucking and its impact on your child’s growth and development – no matter your child’s age.

What does treatment involve?

The first step is to come in for a comprehensive assessment. At this appointment, we will gather a detailed history, perform a thorough intra-oral and extra-oral assessment, screen for any sleep, airway, and/or developmental issues that may be contributing, and take photos and measurements.

We will then collaborate this information and determine, along with our qualified dentists and allied-health team, what may be contributing to your child's sucking habit, if any underlying issues need to be addressed before we try and break the habit and the best course of treatment for your individual child.

In order to break the habit, it may be suggested that a QUIT Program is carried out over a 4 month period with our Certified Thumb Sucking Clinic Provider. Our clinically proven QUIT program is designed to empower and encourage your child to break their habit for good. You’ll also learn personalised strategies on what you can do to help reduce the impact of their thumb or finger sucking habit, and most importantly, you can put a take some pressure off yourself, and sit back as we help you through one of your most difficult parenting woes.

To find out more about our Thumb Sucking Program and how we can help, contact us at KIDS.

Airways and Sleep in Children

Is your child tired and cranky? Are they snoring or grinding? Are they restless sleepers? Do they have dark rings underneath their eyes?

"Have you considered having your child's sleep evaluated?"

"Has your child been tested for allergies?"

"Has a dentist checked the growth and development of your child's mouth?"

At KIDS our highly trained staff understand the domino effect of undiagnosed sleep and airway problems.

We understand that when your child cannot breathe through their nose, the only option is to breathe through their mouth., and that mouth breathing 24 hours a day, day in and day out, takes a toll on the development of their dental, airway, and facial development as well as their overall health and wellbeing.

Just because your child may be sleeping long enough doesn't mean they are sleeping well. They may be snoring or breathing heavily, grinding their teeth, bed wetting or waking up tired of a morning. These are all signs that something is going on in their sleep and further investigation is needed.

Poor sleep can lead to;

  • poor concentration,
  • behavioural problems,
  • tantrums,
  • issues with learning,
  • anxiety,
  • defiant or contrary behaviour
  • growth and development issues,
  • low IQ, and
  • other health-related problems

How can we help?

Part of our routine assessments here at KIDS is to screen children for possible sleep and airway issues. We are able to provide treatment options and/or referrals to the right specialist to help ensure you and your child are getting a good night's rest.

The sooner these sleep issues are picked up the better.

If you would like to have your child's sleep and airways assessed, book an appointment today.

OM and Orthodontics

Are you having Invisalign as an adult to straighten your teeth after having orthodontics when you were younger?

Have you ever wondered why your teeth moved and you need treatment again?

Did you know, where your tongue rests in your mouth can interfere with maintaining your beautiful straight smile after Orthodontics?

A tongue that is not sitting up in the roof of your mouth can create a light continuous force against your teeth. If this continues after orthodontics, your teeth may move. This can happen even if you are wearing retainers.

How can we help?

Orofacial Myology helps to correct muscle function to help stop any relapse in your orthodontic treatment, therefore ensuring the best long-term outcome and longevity of your investment.

Our OM Programs are designed with a long-term lifestyle change in mind.

If you have concerns that your tongue may be causing your teeth to move, contact us today.

OM for Adults

When you experience an orofacial disorder as an adult it can often be debilitating, interfering with your everyday life. The good news is, after carrying out a course of orofacial myology exercises, you can be on your way to taking back control of your health.

Common issues we see in adults are;

  • Lip and/or tongue tie restrictions leading to incorrect muscle function and symptoms such as facial/jaw/neck pain,
  • Sleep disorders and snoring which is commonly associated with the airway musculature and tongue resting position,
  • Jaw / TMJ Pain,
  • Open mouth breathing,
  • Oral habits such as nail-biting.

When people are in pain, they recruit additional muscles to do the everyday activities of chewing, swallowing, speech and facial expression. This can increase pain and excessive strain in the joint and muscles.

Identifying and treating muscle dysfunction by toning and strengthening the muscles helps to reduce pain and improve range of motion. Research has shown that patients undergoing orofacial myology have a significant reduction in pain, an increased range of motion in their jaw and reduced frequency and severity of signs and symptoms.

How can we help?

To help you, we work on things such as;

  • the position of your tongue and lips when at rest,
  • chewing and swallowing patterns,
  • the way you breathe,
  • strengthening particular muscles,
  • developing motor skills to improve your control over your orofacial muscles

We work alongside our specially trained dentists to ensure you get the best possible outcome of your treatment, whether that be for a lip and/or tongue tie release, TMJ pain, orthodontics or snoring laser treatment.

The most important thing to remember is that you are working towards a long-term goal of restoring balance to your life.

The Importance Of Being Informed

At the end of the day, we want to ensure you are making the decision that suits you and your family.

That's why we provide you with a range of information from credible sources that will be independent of us.  You can then explore, research, discuss and come to the conclusions to seek more information from us.

Preferred Provider

We believe in providing you with transparency in the Quality and Care we provide your child at KIDS.

It's therefore important to understand what your options are in regards to Preferred Health Fund Providers and Health Funds options.

Preferred Providers ... what are they?

• Many providers have taken up contracted provider schemes with Health Insurance Funds, where an agreed fee is charged to patients for pre-determined fees for treatment. Providers agree to this with the hope to receive more patients as they receive more patients at lower fees.

• Fixed Price Treatment automatically limits the time, type and quality of service your child receives. This in effects dictates the treatment they receive as opposed to the treatment they actually require.

• Preferred Provider status limits the fewer claimable services in the same calendar year compared to an unaffiliated provider.

We have your interests at Heart.

Health Funds

At KIDS we believe that you deserve the best care regardless of your wallet size! That is why we choose to remain unaffiliated with any provider but allow you to claim via HICAPS to minimise the gap.

We don't believe people should be dictated to by health funds on the treatment they need by what premium they pay. We know money can be tight, but that should not be the reason you do not receive the care you need! If you have regular visits, it helps to minimise more expensive treatment in the long run.

Children deserve the best start in life and we want to provide the health tools and knowledge to them so they can implement healthy changes from a young age. We understand that as a parent that it can be tough, stressful and sometimes just frantic that the last thing you think of is oral health and training your children for better health.

Did you know that most health funds are owned by private enterprises and are always looking for ways to have the best return on their investment? That is why we want to provide to our families and not worry what any health fund says.

We also do not believe that people should go to a clinic based on where their provider tells them. We have flexible payment options to ensure you receive the treatment you and your child need.

Is your healthcare right for you? http://www.adaftp.com.au/PHI/PHIFactSheet.pdf

We believe that it's important that you get a range of information from independent and credible sources that will inform you to make the decisions that suit you and your family.
